How it is calculated

A SIP invests the same amount every month. Each instalment grows for the months left, so early instalments grow the most.

Instalments are taken at the start of each month (how mutual-fund SIPs work), which is the "annuity due" formula below.

FV = P × [((1 + i)ⁿ − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i)
P = monthly SIP, i = annual return ÷ 12 ÷ 100, n = months
Example. ₹5,000 a month for 10 years at 12% a year: you invest ₹6,00,000 and it grows to about ₹11,61,695 — a gain of ₹5,61,695. At 6% inflation, that ₹11,61,695 buys what about ₹6,48,684 buys today.

Questions

Does the SIP calculator account for inflation?

Yes. Set the inflation rate (6% a year is a common long-run figure for India) and the calculator shows what the final value is worth in today’s money, and your real return: 12% a year at 6% inflation is about 5.7% a year of real growth.

What return should I assume for a SIP?

It depends on the fund. Large-cap equity funds have historically returned roughly 10–12% a year over long periods, debt funds 6–8%. Past returns are not guaranteed, so try a lower figure too and see how much it changes.

Is the SIP calculator result guaranteed?

No. Markets move, so the actual value will differ. The calculator shows what a steady return would produce, which is useful for planning, not a promise.

What is the difference between SIP value and XIRR?

The SIP calculator projects forward from an assumed return. XIRR works backward: from what you actually invested and what it is worth now, it tells you the return you really earned.

How do I track my real SIPs?

Add them in Spendly: each instalment is priced at its own date’s NAV, missed months are flagged, and you see the real XIRR. You can also import every past instalment from your CAS statement.
