A step-up (or top-up) SIP increases the monthly amount once a year — for example by 10% after each yearly raise. Each instalment is invested at the start of its month and grows until the end.
The calculator runs month by month: the SIP stays the same for 12 months, then goes up by your step-up percentage. It also works out the plain SIP that never changes, so you can see what the step-up adds.
Each month: value = (value + this month’s SIP) × (1 + r/12) SIP rises by the step-up % every 12 months
Questions
What is a step-up SIP?
A SIP whose monthly amount increases automatically every year by a fixed percentage or amount. Many fund houses let you set this up when you start the SIP.
How much should I step up each year?
A common approach is to match your yearly raise — 5–10%. Even a small step-up makes a large difference over 10–20 years.
Why does this differ slightly from other calculators?
Calculators differ on whether instalments go in at the start or end of the month and how they compound. This one invests at the start of each month, like most SIPs.
Can Spendly track a step-up SIP?
Yes. Spendly tracks every SIP instalment at its own NAV, so a higher amount after a step-up is simply recorded as it happens.
