Credit Card Payment Calculator — the real cost of paying only the minimum
Carrying a card balance? See how long it takes and how much interest you pay if you pay only the minimum due — and how much faster a fixed monthly payment clears it.
Paying ₹5,000 a month instead
Assumes no new spending, a minimum due of 5% (at least ₹200) and 18% GST on interest. Your bank’s terms decide the real figures.
Add your card in Spendly: it tracks the statement and due date, sets the bill aside before it is due, and shows billed and unbilled spend separately.
Track my card →How it is calculated
When you pay less than the full statement balance, the bank charges interest on what is left — typically 2.5% to 3.75% a month on Indian cards — and GST of 18% on that interest. New spends usually lose their interest-free period too.
Each month the calculator adds interest (and GST on it) to the balance, then takes off your payment: either the minimum due (5% of the balance here, at least ₹200) or the fixed amount you choose. It assumes you stop using the card, so the real picture with new spending is worse.
Each month: balance = balance + interest × 1.18 − payment interest = balance × monthly rate; minimum due = 5% of balance (at least ₹200)
Questions
What happens if I pay only the minimum due?
You avoid a late fee, but interest is charged on the unpaid balance — and usually on new purchases from the day you make them. The balance shrinks very slowly, as the example shows.
What is the difference between the statement balance and the minimum due?
The statement (total) amount due is everything billed on the statement; paying it in full by the due date means no interest. The minimum due is a small part of it that only keeps the account in good standing.
Is GST charged on credit card interest?
Yes, GST at 18% applies to finance charges and fees on credit cards in India.
How do I avoid card interest?
Pay the full statement balance by the due date every month. If you cannot, pay as much as you can and stop new spending on that card until it is cleared.
Can Spendly remind me before the card bill is due?
Yes. Spendly tracks each card’s statement and due date, counts the bill in Safe to Spend before it is due, and shows how much of your balance is billed and unbilled.
