How it is calculated

CAGR (compound annual growth rate) smooths out the good and bad years into one yearly rate, so a 3-year and a 10-year investment can be compared fairly.

It is right for one lump sum. For money added over time — a SIP — use the XIRR calculator instead.

CAGR = (End value ÷ Start value)^(1 ÷ years) − 1
Example. ₹1,00,000 that grew to ₹2,50,000 in 7 years is a CAGR of 14% a year — 2.5 times your money. At 6% inflation, the real growth is about 7.5% a year.

Questions

What is a good CAGR in India?

Beating inflation (about 6%) is the floor. Fixed deposits give roughly 7%, and diversified equity funds have historically given 10–12% over long periods. Compare the real CAGR, not the headline.

What is the difference between CAGR and absolute return?

Absolute return is the total gain: ₹1 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh is 150%. CAGR spreads it over the years: 150% over 7 years is 14% a year.

CAGR or XIRR — which should I use?

CAGR for a single investment made once. XIRR when money went in (or came out) on different dates, like a SIP.

Can Spendly show the CAGR of my investments?

Yes. Spendly tracks every holding and shows its return; for SIPs it uses XIRR from each real instalment.
