How it is calculated

Net worth is the value of everything you own minus everything you owe. Use today’s values: what your investments are worth now, not what you paid.

The calculator also shows the quickly usable part — bank, cash and market investments — because PF, gold and property cannot pay a bill next week. Debts as a share of what you own is a quick check on how much of your wealth is borrowed.

Net worth = (bank + cash + investments + PF/PPF/NPS + gold + property) − (home loan + other loans + card dues)
Example. ₹1.5 lakh in the bank, ₹5,000 cash, ₹4 lakh of investments, ₹3 lakh in PF and ₹1 lakh of gold make ₹9.55 lakh owned. With a ₹2 lakh personal loan and ₹30,000 of card dues, net worth is ₹7.25 lakh, of which ₹5.55 lakh is quickly usable; debts are 24% of what you own.

Questions

How do I calculate my net worth?

Add up what you own at today’s value, add up everything you owe, and subtract. Do it on the same day each time so the numbers are comparable.

Should I include my house?

You can — it is an asset. Many people track net worth both with and without their home, because a home you live in cannot easily be spent.

What is a good net worth?

There is no single number. More useful is whether it grows every year. A common rule of thumb says net worth should reach your yearly income × (your age ÷ 10), but it ignores where you started.

Can Spendly track my net worth automatically?

Yes. Spendly adds up your accounts, investments (priced daily), loans and card dues into one net worth on Home, with the change since last month.
